Aiming for a creative life

I Am Santo

Why hold on?
Why promise connection?
The depths of friendship
A misdirection.
The truth of the matter
Is what you wanted you didn’t get.

Out of me, out of you
Out of us, it’s through
But you uttered lies
When what was true
Was a simple goodbye
And have those bygones let.

You’ll gather around
Your gaggle of friends
And cry, telling them
How it all ends.
But truth be told
You know you pumped the brakes on things.

They’ll applaud your strength
Say “you did the right thing,”
And in their embrace
You’ll knot that loose string
That you left for me
Another of your lost little flings.

But
here’s some news for you
That life without me
Is gonna be blue.
That kindness like mine
Is more precious than gold.
And the warmth I offered
Against the bitterest cold
Is the kind of love
You truly need.
Because friends like me
For others we bleed.
Oh you’ll find
You’ll surely see
That the lie you told
Will never set you free.

No that lie you told
It won’t let you be.

So I light this fire
Pretend to tend to you
Stoke the coals for warmth
Because I needed too
A little tenderness,
Comfort and forgiving.

But the flames are sterile
And without a smile.
The laughter missing
And it’s been a while
Since joy filled this heart
And made this life worth living.

And suddenly
your lie makes sense
What good is friendship
With such expense
As caring for one
That doesn’t care for himself.

Because no matter
How huge the heart
The failed love here
Right from the start
Wasn’t you and I
But just me and no one else.

So
here’s some news for you
That life without me
Is gonna improve.
That kindness like mine
While precious like gold,
And the warmth I offered
Could stop the cold,
The kind of love
You truly need
Isn’t from a friend that
Only for others will bleed.
Oh you’ll find
You’ll surely see
That the lie you told
Will set you free.

Yes that lie you told
It will let you be.

And that lie you told
Maybe it will fix me.  (at That Lie You Told)
